First Convention of Assam Scheduled Students' Union recalls Contributions of Dr BR Ambedkar

TANGLA: "Scheduled Caste communities are one of the most disadvantaged socio-economic groups in the nation. The issues plaguing the Scheduled Castes, Other Backward Classes, minorities, and other marginalized groups must be addressed by the government with priority for growth and development to be inclusive." This was observed by general secretary of the All Assam Scheduled Students' Union, Sushil Sutradhar.

Addressing the open session of the first annual convention of the All Assam Scheduled Students' Union, BTR Zonal Committee, chaired by president of the Tangla regional unit of the students' body, Bikash Das at Pub-Bor Tangla village near Tangla town in Udalguri district on Saturday, he recalled the contributions of Dr BR Ambedkar in awakening the consciousness of the marginalized communities and securing their rights through the Constitution of India. He also exhorted the government for establishment of an empowered committee to renew the SC certificates and chalk out a new and transparent system for the issue of new ones. He also appealed to the government to secure the social, economic and other rights of the SCs in the State.

The session, inaugurated by president of the BTR Zonal Committee of the students' body, Manik Sarkar, was also addressed by social worker Bikon Deka who asserted that Assam was comparatively free from the evils of casteism, which is prevalent in the northern part of the nation.
