Flood Situation Still Grim in Sivasagar, Assam

75 villages remain under water

JOYSAGAR, Aug 1: Due to continuous rainfall for three consecutive days, the water level of Dikhow river had crossed about 106 cm in Nangalamora and 97 cm in Amgurighat, as per the report of the District Water Resources Department on Wednesday. The water level at Konwarpur and Rupahimukh was 98.23 cm and 102 cm respectively. Areas like Meteka, Amgurighat, Hatikhuk, Konwarpur, Nakatani, Santipur, Jagarahabi, Rupahimukh and Dikhowmukh are still under threat as the flood situation continues to remain grim.

According to the district administration, about 75 villages are still under water and about 12,000 villagers and about 3,200 cattle have been affected.

The Sivasagar District Disaster Management Department, the State Fire Service and the CRPF are conducting rescue and relief works in the affected villages. The District Revenue Circle Department has set up relief camps in various government schools and government offices in the flood-affected areas and rice, salt, wheat and other food items as well as medicines have been distributed to the flood victims.

Sivasagar Deputy Commissioner PG Jha addressed a press meet in his office on Wednesday and he briefly informed about the various rescue and relief works undertaken by the district administration. He also informed that about 15 relief camps had been set up in the entire district and the Public Health Department had been ordered to do the needful to provide pure drinking water to the flood victims. Three mobile medical teams have also been formed by the District Health Department and they are visiting various flood-affected areas. There has been no information about any deaths due to the flood, till the filing of this report. But road communication in various places, including west Sivasagar, Nakatani, Konwarpur and Desangmukh, has been badly hit. Meanwhile, many river embankments are under threat due to heavy current of the Dikhow river and in Konwarpur, Darbar Chuk and Amgurighat the embankments had been partially breached, following which flood water entered many villages on Tuesday night, said sources.
