SILCHAR: The Sepoy Mutiny, regarded as the flash point of beginning of revolt against British tyrannical empire, was first witnessed in northeast at Malegarh near border of Bangladesh in Karimganj. It was on December 18, 1957 when 150 soldiers who broke through the Chittagong armoury of the British, deserted their camps and moved through the highly difficult mountainous terrain of Tripura and Sylhet and chased by the British army reached Malegarh where they had their first encounter with the enemy contingent led by Major Bing. Along with Major Bing, six of the British soldiers were killed. It was a fierce battle of the soldiers in revolt against the British in which 26 soldiers made the supreme sacrifice of their life. A memorial has been raised and their names immortalised at Malegarh.

It was at the Malegarh memorial of Latu in Karimganj district that early in the morning of Friday, district administration, 7 Bn BSF and well known NGO Patkai Trekkers who jointly organised a solemn function to pay flower tributes to the brave and bold soldiers. Deputy Commissioner of Karimganj, Anbamuthan AP, Superintendent of Police, Mayank Kumar Jha, Commandant in Chief of 7 Bn BSF, Manish Kumar, Deputy Commandant, Akhil Chandra Mandal, Assistant Commandant Raj Kumar Meena, Manoj Kilania, Manoj Kumar Pawan Kumar as well as Sajaddul Haque Choudhury, district information and public relations officer offered their homage with all solemnity and sanctity.

Syed Mujib Ahmed, chief convenor, organising secretary, Sudip Das, of Patkai Trekkers, offered their tributes and remembered the martyrs, recalling their supreme sacrifices. The BSF organised an all faith prayer at the memorial site. Guard of honour to the mutineers was paid by the BSF. Patkai Trekkers has taken the initiative to observe 'Martyrs' Day' at Malegarh every year later on joined by the district administration and BSF. A demand was raised by the NGO Patkai Trekkers to declare December 18 as 'national integrity day'.
