SILCHAR: Local MLA Dipayan Chakraborty and district Congress President Abhijit Paul were locked in a verbal duel over the proposed flyover in Silchar. Chakraborty today refuted the allegation made by Paul yesterday regarding the flyover and claimed that within three to four months, the initial and preparatory works for the much-awaited project would begin. He urged the people not to give an audience to the ‘false propaganda’ of the Congress. Chakraborty said that in the recent budget, the state government had allotted Rs 700 crore for the flyover in Silchar. Both the leaders belonging to the Barak Valley had already addressed a leading citizen meet where 99 percent of the speakers had supported the plan of constructing a flyover in Silchar to mitigate the traffic problem.
Earlier on Sunday, Abhijit Paul expressed doubt about the completion of the flyover. He said that, in no other case, there was budget allocation for a proposed flyover in cities like Guwahati, Dibrugarh, and Jorhat. Allocating Rs 700 crore for Silchar flyover was nothing other than an election gimmick, Paul said. He further alleged that the state government had allocated only Rs 100 crore for the newly-formed Barak Valley Development Department and that it was a sufficient indicator of the government’s sincerity for the development of the Valley.
