Guwahati: On Thursday, the Assam Cabinet held a meeting in Dhemaji which was chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. In the meeting, the cabinet came up with some new key decisions which were soon announced to the public.

One of the major decisions taken by the Assam Cabinet was exempting the people belonging to the SC/ST/Adivasi and other Traditional Forest Dwellers from the mandatory two-child policy which was the criteria in Assam to be eligible for government jobs and other benefits from several welfare schemes.

The notification read, "SC/ST/Adivasi and other Traditional Forest Dwellers to be exempted from the purview of Assam Public Services (Application of Small Family Norms in Direct Recruitment) Rules, 2019, relieving these communities from the two-child norm, in order to remove the barrier for them to get into Government services."

Apart from this, the Assam government also announces that the cabinet has approved an incentive of Rs. 1,800 crores for 11 lakh microfinance borrowers, who have been making regular payments.

The cabinet also framed the Assam Social Security Rules, 2021, according to the Code on Social Security, 2020, that was notified by the Government of India on September 29, 2020.

The notification states, "This will pave the way for doing away with all the archaic provisions of earlier Acts creating hurdles in generation of new employment opportunities and bring workers of organised as well as unorganised sectors under a robust social security net.
