MANGALDAI: Former AASU activist and an active social worker of Kalaigaon in Udalguri district, Arup Kumar Sarma is no more. He breathed his last on the midnight of June 12 at his residence at Shantipur of Kalaigaon.

Sarma led the student community as the president of Kalaigaon Anchalik Students' Union and later the Mangaldai Subdivision Students' Union as its general secretary. As a dedicated and a devoted AASU activist, soft-spoken Arup Kumar Sarma was able to win the hearts and minds of the students and people belonging to different identities. Later, he joined active politics through the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and was entrusted with several important responsibilities. In the assembly election in 2011, Arup Kumar Sarma played an important role in the victory of the AGP candidate with his eloquence and organizational skills and with his popularity among cross-section of the society.

But following the failure of the AGP legislator to fulfil the aspirations of the people and the inactivity of the AGP leaders, he resigned from the AGP. Though he was offered the proposal to join national political parties, his sentiment and commitment towards the regional political party made him join the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) and as the secretary of the youth wing of the Bhergaon district committee of BPF, he played a very successful role till his death. His involvement in social service can well be reflected in his role in the construction of the mini stadium at Kalaigaon and the setting up of the JNV at Kalaigaon.

On receipt of the news of his untimely demise, a good number of mourners from the cross-section of the society rushed to his residence since early Saturday morning. Secretary of Mangaldai Press Club, Mukut Raj Sarma, Kalaigaon legislator Maheswar Boro, former Executive Member of BTC, Jagadish Sarkar and office bearers of BPF, office bearers of Darrang district AASU, including its president Khanindra Rajbongshi and general secretary Parag Saharia, and other dignitaries condoled his demise and attended the funeral in Kalaigaon town.
