New Delhi:

Former Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal is expected to be appointed to the Central Cabinet.

After the BJP regained power for the second time, Sonowal was succeeded as Chief Minister by Himanta Biswa Sarma. According to BJP sources, the party leadership summoned Sonowal to Delhi.

Meanwhile, he arrived in Delhi. There is also speculation that the former CM would be appointed as a state governor by the BJP leadership because he has remained loyal to them even after being denied a second term as CM.

Before the 2021 Assam Assembly election, there was much uncertainty over who would be Assam's next chief minister. Unlike the 2016 Assam Assembly election, in which Sonowal was portrayed as the CM face, there was no clear CM face in this race. Himanta Biswa Sarma or Sarbananda Sonowal were both anticipated to take over as Chief Minister of Assam.

To be appointed to the Union Cabinet, the veteran politician must be elected from either house of parliament. Biswajit Daimary resigned from the Rajya Sabha to run in the Assam Vidhan Sabha elections in 2021, leaving a Rajya Sabha seat vacant. According to sources, the former Assam Chief Minister may be requested to fill the position.

Sarbananda Sonowal began his political career as president of the All Assam Student Union (AASU) from 1992 to 1999. He then joined the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and was elected to the Assam legislative assembly on an AGP ticket from the Moran seat in 2001. He was then elected to the Lok Sabha from the Dibrugarh constituency in 2004. He switched to the BJP in 2011, and he won the Lok Sabha elections for the second time in 2014. He then went on to serve as the Union Minister for Sports and Youth Resources under the PM Modi-led NDA government until 2016 when he was named as the CM candidate for the Assam Vidhan Sabha elections.

Sarbananda Sonowal became the state's first BJP chief minister, reigning until 2021 before he was succeeded by Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.
