Former Dhekiajuli legislator Habul Chakraborty passes away at 60

DHEKIAJULI/TEZUR: Former Dhekiajuli constituency Congress MLA Habul Chakraborty passed away on the wee hours of Sunday following cardiac arrest. He was 60.

Habul Chakraborty complained of breathing problems on the wee hours of Sunday. His family members took him to Swahid Manobar Nath 30-bedded Civil Hospital, Dhekiajuli. But later he was taken to Tezpur Medical College and Hospital. Chakraborty breathed his last on the way to Tezpur Medical College.

His body was brought at his ward number 7, Dhekiajuli residence. On hearing about his demise, hundreds of his supporters and well-wishers visited his residence and offered floral tribute at his body. Chakraborty was the son of Dilip Chakraborty and Chhayarani Chakraborty and he was born in 1962. He passed his Higher Secondary exam from LOKD College, Dhekiajuli. He became the ward commissioner of the Dhekiajuli Municipality Board in 1992 and the chairman of the Dhekiajuli Municipality Board in 1993. He became the Dhekiajuli constituency MLA in the 2014 assembly elections.

During his tenure as MLA of Dhekiajuli, Dhekiajuli was declared as a subdivision. His demise has been widely condoled. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal condoled his demise. Apurba Bhattacharjee, Congress (I) spokesperson, said that the party had lost a faithful Congress (I) leader. Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Ripun Bora expressed his deepest condolences. Former Dhekiajuli Municipality chairman Ratul Nath also expressed deep condolence at the demise of Chakraborty. Dhekiajuli Press Club, Dhekiajuli Nagarik Moncha, Bhojpuri Students’ Union, All Assam Bengali Federation Dhekiajuli Unit and many other organizations condoled his demise.

Habul Chakaborty leaves behind his wife, son, daughter and a host of relatives. Shops and business establishments remained closed from Sunday morning till 5 pm as a mark of respect to the departed soul.
