TINSUKIA: A teacher par excellence and an acclaimed academician, Dr Sukhen Chakraborty, who was former Principal of Tinsukia College, passed away at his Kushal Konwar Path, Rangagora Road residence on Sunday morning due to prolonged illness. He was 72.
He joined the Department of Chemistry in 1968 as lecturer and superannuated as Principal in 2005. An alumnus of Tinsukia Bangiya Vidyalaya and Presidency College Kolkata, Dr Chakraborty was rank holder in the matric examination. Though he cleared the Indian Administrative Service examination and was posted in Tripura State cadre, his passion for teaching drove him back to Tinsukia and he joined Tinsukia College. He was actively involved with the Nikhil Bharat Bongio Sahitya Sanmilan, Durgabari Trust and Netaji Foundation, besides being member of several academic bodies and socio-cultural organizations.
No sooner did the news of his death spread in the town than many of his admirers and students thronged his house to pay their last respects. Several organizations, including Tinsukia College, Bangiya Vidyalaya and Tinsukia District Journalists’ Association, expressed condolences to the bereaved family. He leaves behind his wife and a son.
