DOOMDOOMA: In view of heavy erosion taking place at Phelai by the River Brahmaputra in Hatighuli area of western Saikhowa, a team of 'Dibrugarh-Tinsukia District Flood and Erosion Control Struggle Forum' led by its president Binod Kedia visited the site on Friday and appealed to the district administration and Water Resources department to take immediate erosion control measures there.

In a meeting jointly organized at the erosion site by the people of No.2 Kapahtoli, Naokota and Kapahtoli villages, Prabhat Bodo, engineer of Water Resources department and MLA's representative Churamoni Sharma were present. The people demanded the department concerned to take prompt action to check further erosion. President Binod Kedia informed the gathering that already a scheme worth Rs 12.5 crore had been sent for necessary approval. He, therefore, exhorted the department to start work next winter after receipt of the due approval from the government. The team also visited Beesanimukh and Sadiya 8th Mile where heavy erosion is taking place due to the River Kundil.

Already a part of the approach road leading to Sudhakantha Bhupen Hazarika Setu was eroded away by the River Kundil. Although the bridge construction company Nabayug Engineering Company had taken up erosion-control measures with the help of geo-bag on a war footing, yet the forum team expressed dissatisfaction after witnessing some defects in their work. The forum urged them to take advice from the Water Resources department so that the anomalies could be rectified.
