MANGALDAI: Immediately after his taking over as the 25th Superintendent of Police of Darrang, Sushanta Biswa Sarma carried out intensive drive against the organized gangs of drugs peddlers, illegal traders of cannabis, gamblers and other criminal elements in the district.
Till date, the Darrang Police have seized a reasonable quantity of brown sugar and arrested several peddlers. Few days back, under his instruction, Darrang Police seized smuggled Burmese supari (dried betel nuts) from two trucks worth around Rs 40 lakh.
The Kharupetia Police, as per the instruction of Sushanta Biswa Sarma, in the early hours on Thursday conducted a raid in the residence of one Jaban Ali alias Nata at village Alikash under Kharupetia Police Station and seized three kg of contraband ganja. The arrested smuggler led the police team to conduct raid at the residence of three more persons, namely Omar Ali at Bihudia, Ful Mohammad at Hospital Road, Niz Nagajan and Inamul Haque at Ghan Simalu of Kharupetia area and police seized seven kg of contraband ganja. All the four smugglers have been booked under the provision of Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substance Act.
