LAKHIMPUR: Noted freedom fighter Chakradhar Bhuyan is no more. He breathed his last due to old age ailments on Monday night around 10:30 pm at his residence at Panigaon of Lakhimpur district. He was 92. The mortal remains of the freedom fighter were cremated with full state honour at Panigaon public crematory ground on Tuesday around 12:30 pm by offering a gun salute. Born at Panigaon in 1929 on August 9 (1851 Shaka, 23rd Shravan of Indian calendar), Chakradhar Bhuyan took part in the freedom movement following the path of non-violence advocated by Mahatma Gandhi.

He joined in the Quit India Movement leading the associate freedom fighters and volunteers. Because of his efficiency and credibility, Chakradhar Bhuyan was given the responsibility of a spy to collect the secret information of the British during the freedom movement. After the independence of the nation, the freedom fighter started his service life as a teacher in 1951 at Bakal Gaon LP School.

Then he served at Salal Gaon LP School, Bosagaon Boys' LP School, Dakhin Telahi MV School and Panigaon MV School. He retired from the Panigaon MV School in 1990 on March 31.

He was involved in various social and cultural activities which established him as a prominent social activist. As an efficient teacher too, Bhuyan acclaimed a unique position and popularity in the southern part of Lakhimpur district with his smiling face and altruistic attitude.

He served as the president of Village Defence Party for several years and spearheaded a cultural movement in the area being involved with Panigaon Pragati Sangha, one of the oldest social, cultural institutions of the State being established in 1924.

The freedom fighter is survived by his wife Punyada Bhuyan, younger son Nabakanta Bhuyan, daughter Kusum Bhuyan along with a host of relatives. His eldest son Dayananda Bhuyan expired four years ago.

Draped with the national flag, his body was escorted to the Panigaon Pragati Sangha, Panigaon MV School and Panigaon Namghar wherein the public paid him last homage. As soon as the news of his demise spread, local public thronged at his residence and paid him last tribute.

Vice-president of Asom Rajyik Mukti Jujaru Sanmilan Bholanath Nagaria, who is also the president of Lakhimpur district unit of the organization, paid last homage to the freedom fighter

On the other hand, the Lakhimpur district administration apprised the family members of the freedom fighter about the State Government's decision of cremating him with full State honour. During the cremation at Panigaon public crematory ground, Lakhimpur Deputy Commissioner Sumit Sattawan, Superintendent of Police Bedanta Madhav Rajkhowa, Additional Deputy Commissioner Sanjib Doloi and other office bearers paid last homage to the freedom fighter.
