Freedom fighter Kandarpa Kumar Deka’s demise condoled

DOOMDOOMA: Kandarpa Kumar Deka, who actively took part in the freedom struggle and was closely associated with various socio-cultural organizations of Doomdooma, breathed his last at Rukmini Nagar, Guwahati on Tuesday. He was 95 and is survived by his only son Dr Dilip Kumar Deka, Professor, Assam Agricultural University, Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, Khanapars and three daughters. His wife Bina Deka predeceased him.

Born in Jagara village of Nalbari district in 1924, he came to Doomdooma at the age of 20 years and joined the Bordubi TE. He qualified for pharmacist degree from erstwhile Barry White Medical College, Dibrugarh while in service and continuously served in the tea garden till his superannuation in 1984. He took part in the Quit India Movement of 1942 and carried out organizational works in the villages assigned to him. He also took lead in the co-operative movement started in his village Jagara. After his retirement he became actively associated with social works of Doomdooma. He was vice-president of Asam Chah Karmachari Sangha (ACKS), Doomdooma branch and was joint secretary of Assam Pharmacist Union. His death has cast a pall of gloom in the town and has been widely mourned by a number of organizations.
