Frequent power cuts irk people of Nagaon

NAGAON: Frequent power cuts in Nagaon have made life miserable for the people of the district. The department concerned as well as the public representatives of the district have allegedly not tried to solve the problem till date. Rather, all of them simply swept the problem under the carpet by saying that the power cuts were due to a shortage of power supply.

According to a highly placed source of the district ASEB, the frequent power cuts, especially in Nagaon, were due to the continued negligence of Power Grid. During the tenure of the previous Congress government, the entire responsibility of power supply in the State was handed over to Power Grid instead of APDCL through notification.

According to the new power setup, the APDCL proposed one 160MVA transformer in the Samaguri power unit to meet the power supply demand in Nagaon and Power Grid had assured to set up the transformer. But after almost two years of the assurance, the transformer is yet to be set up in Samaguri. As a result, the available power supply is not enough to meet the demand of the entire district. Moreover, out of the two transformers (50 MVA each) in Samaguri, one is not working. Only one transformer has to bear the entire power load, said the source.
