From 'Pedal Maari Maari' to politics: Singer Babu Baruah to join Congress on August 25

Guwahati: Assam's singing sensation Babu Baruah, who gained massive popularity with the release of his superhit song 'Pedal Maari Maari Maari' has announced that he will joing the Congress party ahead of the upcoming 2021 Assembly polls in the state.

"I had opposed the CAA with several parties. The Congress had also opposed the Act. The Congress had given me a proposition to join the party; perhaps they wish to float artistes who had opposed the CAA. I am thinking of joining on August 25", Babu told media.

The singing heartthrob further added that he is likely to contest the polls from his home constituency of West Guwahati.

Babu Baruah added that fellow musicians Ajay Phukan and Anupam Saikia shall also join Congress, which is said to be eyeing a grand alliance with the AIUDF party ahead of the polls.

Babu has also said that several more associated with the cultural sphere of Assam -- including technicians and actresses -- shall be joining the Grand Old Party ahead of the ensuing polls.

Babu's joining of the Congress shall come days after the rival Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) buoyed its ranks with the joining of several high-profile celebrities such as the renowned actress Asha Bordoloi and Vidya Sagar.

Prior to this, 'Ratnakar' actor Jatin Bora had reaffirmed his commitment towards upholding the diktat of the BJP party, months after quitting the saffron brigade over the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

While announcing this at a press conference, Bora also expressed regret over leaving the party in the first place and said that the anti-CAA andolan was an attempt to "mislead the people" by anti-BJP forces.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal would never harm the interests of the people of Assam, Bora further added. Back in the month of December, Jatin Bora resigned from the BJP as a mark of protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. He also quit the post of chairperson of the state-run Assam State Film Finance Development Corporation at Latasil playground in the presence of a massive crowd that had gathered to protest against the contentious Act.
