GUWAHATI: The fugitive former Chief Engineer of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation Tasdiqur Rahman has been arrested by a team of Assam Chief Minister's Special Vigilance Cell (CM's SVC) in Rajasthan on Monday.

Accused Rahman who has been evading arrest since October this year was arrested for misappropriating crores of Government funds allocated for various developmental works in Guwahati city area.

A probe began into the matter when irregularities and illegalities amounting to Rs. 20 crore during the tenure of Tasdiqur Rahman came to light. Rahman's arrest follows a series of other arrests of GMC officials on allegations of misappropriating crores of Government funds for executing de-siltation work. A director of a private firm was also arrested earlier in this connection.

As per a statement, irregularities and illegalities were detected by the GMC Commissioner in the execution of de-siltation work in Guwahati. On that basis, an inquiry was ordered under the supervision of GMC Joint Commissioner Pankaj Chakravarty. It is learnt that the enquiry report mentions Dinsan Global Venture Pvt Ltd, a firm engaged in hiring vehicles and machineries for executing the de-siltation work from April 2 to May 26 this year.

It may be recalled here that back in October, Chief Minister's Special Vigilance Cell conducted search operations at the residences of the seven officials of the civic body.

These GMC officials, including Former Chief Engineer Tasdiqur Rahman, have been accused of conspiring with contractors and refraining from implementing de-siltation works as per the tender documents. Further, the accused GMC officials have also been accused of releasing payments to contractors without execution of works.

The Superintendent of Guwahati Municipal Corporation Manjit Bujarbaruah was also placed on suspension for allegations of misappropriating Government funds.

There are also reports of an amount as high as Rs. 40 lakhs misappropriated for disposing off sludge from Bharalu river.
