SIVASAGAR: There is a wave of joy in Sivasagar as fund has been allocated in the budget to upgrade Sibsagar College to University level. As soon as Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma made this announcement, the college became joyful. After receiving this news, the college students as well as the college family performed the college song “Puhor Bichari Jao” in the college campus.

It is pertinent to mention here that Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that Sibsagar College would be given the status of university last year. The Sivasagar College family is pleased with the statement made in the budget on Thursday, according to Dr. Profulla Chandra Kalita, the college’s principal. “His assurance has now become a reality,” he said.

The college has been playing a pivotal role in human resource development for more than seven decades through the dissemination of quality education since its establishment. The college, which is one of the premier centres of higher education in Upper Assam, was established on November 2, 1947 on the banks of the historic Joysagar tank under the care and tireless efforts of Padmadhar Chaliha, popularly known as ‘Phulanir Kabi’. Later this institution was developed as a prestigious institution with the efforts of Seuj Konwar Parag Chaliha, son of Padmadhar Chaliha.

Imran Shah, former president of Axom Xahitya Xabha took his undergraduate course at Sibsagar College and later served as a professor at the college. There are many others who have taught at the college including late Dr Bhabendra Nath Saikia and Dr Biren Borkatki. Dr Nirmal Prova Bordoloi was a student of the college.
