DIGBOI: Digboi police arrested six persons for their alleged involvement in gambling after a raid was conducted on Friday night here at Digboi Kalibari housing area in Tinsukia district. Among the accused identified were Manuj Kr. Jaiswal, Suraj Choudhary, Kishore Choudhary, Amitabh Gogoi, Mukul Bhattacharya and Bishnu Jaishy. They were arrested under Gambling and betting offence. Five of the accused hail from Tipam road area while one is a resident of Muliabari area, stated a police source. “Based on a credible information regarding an ongoing act of gambling in one of the rented house reportedly hired by one Adharam Yadav in Kalibari area, we raided the house and busted the den,” Inspector Dibya Jyoti Dutta said.

“Six of the gamblers were held besides an amount of Rs. 30,320, four mobile handsets and 2 two wheelers (scooty) bearing registration no. AS23 R 4909 and AS23W 3904 were seized from the gambling site,” added the police official who had led the crackdown. Organized gambling of various nature involving huge amount is nothing new in Digboi. These gamblings are conducted by strong networks in different vulnerable places including the abandoned and isolated AOD residential quarters. Digboi MLA Suren Phukan immediately on winning the 2021 Assembly election said that he would adopt zero tolerance to any form of gambling. Meanwhile, the six accused allegedly involved in gambling were prosecuted after a case was registered u/s 14/15 of Assam Game and Betting Act 1970.
