SIVASAGAR: The Freshmen Social 2025 was organized under the aegis of Gargaon College Students’ Union on Wednesday at Gargaon College. The programme began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by Biman Chandra Baruah, president of governing body of the college. The programme was hosted by the president of Gargaon College Students’ Union, Anurag Bora. The welcome speech was delivered by the Principal of the college, and eminent academician, poet and essayist Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta. In his speech, Dr Mahanta welcomed the newcomers and shared the college’s rich history and achievements. He emphasized the importance of skill-based learning alongside academic education, highlighting how complementary skills mould students into well-rounded personalities. Dr Mahanta urged the newcomers to adopt a sense of responsibility towards their families, college, and society, striving to become honest and upright individuals. He urged the students to join hands and contribute to the college’s growth and establish it as a beacon of excellence in higher education.
Samiran Phukan, general secretary of All Assam Students’ Union, graced the occasion as the chief guest. In his inspiring address, Phukan urged the students to make the most of their educational journey, emphasizing the importance of utilizing their time wisely. He shared his thoughts on various aspects, including students’ true passions, developing a sense of purpose, and their future livelihoods. He also discussed the role of students in shaping Assamese nationalism. Furthermore, Phukan highlighted some of the positive initiatives undertaken by AASU, such as ‘Pratyasha’, aimed at enhancing educational standards.
Further, Dr Dilip Kumar Deka, Chief Advisor of Gargaon College Students’ Union, in his address, urged the newcomers to adapt to the new times and develop themselves. He emphasized the importance of holistic development including the cultivation of hobbies during the college years, encouraging the freshers to make the most of the opportunities at Gargaon College, both academically and socially. Manab Hazarika, president of Sivasagar district unit of AASU, and Dipankar Saikia, secretary of Sivasagar district unit of AASU also attended the event.
