Boko: Garo National Council (GNC), Kamrup district unit, had organized a public meeting with 35 villages of Assam and Meghalaya at Ukium village, some 75 km west from Guwahati on Friday. The meeting was presided over by Enindra Marak, president of Kamrup district GNC, in the presence of Golap Medhi, Kamrup district Zilla Parishad member, Garo Women Council delegates and Garo Youth Council delegates.
In the meeting, Enindra Marak elaborated about the Kulsi River multipurpose dam project. He said that if the dam was constructed there, the people of the Ukium area would become refugees in their own country. He added that the dam would be generating 55-megawatt electricity but it would destroy the aquatic ecosystem. Marak further said that the villagers, Garo National Council, and other organizations passed a resolution that no dam project would be allowed to be constructed in Ukium village.
