GOLAGHAT: Geeta, the beloved 48-year-old elephant who once became the face of Assam’s tourism in the iconic 2018 “Awesome Assam” campaign alongside Bollywood actor Priyanka Chopra, passed away today after a prolonged struggle for survival.

The gentle giant, after being hit by a speeding vehicle on a highway over two months ago, had been critically injured. Geeta’s condition steadily deteriorated despite relentless efforts by local veterinarians and a specialized team from Reliance Foundation’s Vantara initiative—led by renowned elephant expert Dr. Kushal Konwar Sharma. This morning, she succumbed to her injuries, leaving behind a trail of sorrow across the state.

Her devoted mahout, Rabi Das, who had cared for her for decades and remained by her side throughout her treatment, was inconsolable. “She was not just an elephant, she was family,” he said with tears in his eyes.

Geeta represented Assam's rich natural heritage and the close relationship between people and elephants, making her more than just a tourist attraction. She helped highlight the state’s wildlife and serene beauty on the national stage by marking her presence in the “Awesome Assam” tourism campaign.

Animal lovers, conservationists, and citizens across Assam are mourning her death, with many taking to social media to share their grief and memories. Her passing has also reignited concerns over the safety of elephants and wildlife near highways and the urgent need for stronger conservation efforts.
