Ghana Kanta Borah leads intellectual movement, contributes to Assamese literature

LAKHIMPUR: There are few people who work silently and contribute much to the society without having any selfish interest or longing for fame and recognition. One such person in Lakhimpur district is Ghana Kanta Borah who has been spearheading an intellectual movement on the bank of the Subansiri River in Dhakuakhona subdivision by contributing much to Assamese literature and the academic field of the State.

Borah, whose self-composed and edited books, were potent enough to acclaim academic value in Dibrugarh University, started writing and editing books from 1991. His first piece of composition was a collection of some literary articles titled Deshi Bideshi Sahityat Ebhumuki which was published on September 5 in 1995. This book was selected as the reference book for BA and MA students of Assamese subject under Dibrugarh University. He edited some plays written in Sankardeva and post-Sankardeva eras of Assamese literature like Kansa Badh (2002) by Ramcharan Thakur, Chordhara (1999) by Madhavadeva, Ram Vijay (1993) by Sankardeva, Uddhavjan (1993) by Gopaldeva and Arjun Bhanjan (1999) by Madhavadeva which were published by Banlata Publication of Dibrugarh. His other collection of articles titled Sahitya: Dutiman Chintar Dharan was published in 1993. All these books were included as reference book in BA and MA courses of Dibrugarh universities. Besides these, a collection of lyrics titled Mandakini was published in 2005.

Son of Someswar Borah and Ahina Borah, Ghan Kanta Borah was born at Ethabari village under Dhalpur Mauza in Lakhimpur district and started his schooling at Dhalpur and pursued higher education in Dhemaji College and Dibrugarh University from where he took his MA degree in Assamese in 1985. He started his career at Kasua Bahumukhi High School as part-time teacher and then served in Bordoloni College and Lakhimpur Purbanchal College. He is now working as honorary teacher in a junior college named Renga Subansiri College at Patrisuk of Bebejia-Subansiri area under Dhakuakhona subdivision. Borah was involved with the literary programmes broadcast by Dibrugarh Radio since his student days and now he is involved with the literature branch of Subansiri regional unit and Dhakuakhona district unit of Srimanta Sankardev Sangha, in addition to rendering his service as social activist too.

“May this active literary personality, who is continuing his practice in literature despite his pecuniary difficulties, get recognition from the government or public organizations,” wished his well-wishers.
