Girl hangs herself in destitute home of Darrang district

MANGALDAI: Strong sensation prevailed in Dalgaon and Dhula area of the district following suicide of a girl in safe custody at the Dhula Regional Physically Handicapped Development Association (DRPHDA) on Friday at about 9.41 am. The deceased was a resident of village Nagaon Besimari under Dalgaon Police Station of Darrang district. According to the FIR lodged by the brother of the girl, one Maidul Hussain, son of Samsul Haque of village Aminpara under Rowta Police Station in Udalguri district, was in a relationship with the girl since the last three years and

at about 2 pm on September 10, accused Mainul took away the girl from her residence and kept her in his residence. It has also been alleged that the accused had outraged the modesty of the girl and also assaulted her. In this regard, Dalgaon Police registered a case vide number 458/20 under section 120(B) /376/420/366 IPC.

On the basis of the information from Dalgaon Police Station, Rowta Police recovered the girl at midnight on September 10 and handed over the girl to Dalgaon Police Station. Due to non-availability of female lock-up in Dalgaon Police Station, the girl was sent to the Dhula Regional Physically Handicapped Development Association which runs a destitute home. Spending the night in DRPHDA, the girl reportedly hanged herself in the bathroom.

Though the DRPHDA management has claimed to take all required protective and security measures for their inmates, the suicide by the girl has created sensation here. On Friday, the body was sent for post mortem at Mangaldai Civil Hospital in presence of a magistrate.
