DOOMDOOMA: "In order to strengthen the nationalism of a nation, people must be ready to do hard labour. Though the Assamese people speak of nationalism but they are not prepared to do hard labour." This was observed by noted economist and former Vice-Principal of Tinsukia College, Dr. Jyoti Prasad Chaliha while delivering the Robin Choudhury memorial lecture on the topic Asomiya Jaati Gathanar Samashya Aru Bidwat Samaj (The problems of formation of the Assamese nation and the Intellectual Society) organized by Doomdooma College recently.

Dr. Chaliha said that because of Information Technology, many changes had been brought into the society. So we have to look at it with a changed perspective. On the other hand, globalization gave rise to a new economic nation. The concept of Assamese nationality is narrow. It does not give importance to aboriginal people within it, he said.

He disagreed with Dr Bani Kanta Kakati's saying, "Without language consciousness, there cannot be nationality consciousness." Dr Chaliha said, "As a small nation we have its importance in our social life. But the Assamese nation is race based. Importance of skilled labour is being overlooked by it." The tea tribes and the immigrant Muslims are in the process of assimilation with the Assamese nation. But we are not prepared to look at their labour from a positive angle. The danger is imminent if we do not make the process of Assamese nation formation stronger, he further said.

Principal Dr. Prakash Jyoti Borthakur lit the ceremonial lamp while the president of the governing body of the college, Ramesh Goswami garlanded the portrait of Robin Choudhury.
