GOALPARA: The increasing man-elephant conflict in Goalpara district has proved to be a matter of grave concern for the district administration. According to the official sources, so far, 12 persons have lost their lives in elephant attacks in Goalpara district only in this year.

Latest on the card, one Pradip Das was trampled to death by a wild jumbo at Matia area on Saturday. Seeing the gravity of the situation, Meenakshi Das Nath, Deputy Commissioner on Monday urgently called in a meeting at the DC's conference hall to chalk out a plan to minimize the conflict, loss of lives and properties.

Besides Manas Das, ADC on Forest charge and Jitendra Kumar, DFO (Territorial), all the circle officers and other stakeholders participated in the meeting and discussed in details how to overcome the challenges in this regard. The Deputy Commissioner directed the circle officers (COs) to sketch out all the elephant corridors and prime conflict zones and share the information with the Forest department.

She also requested the stakeholders to coordinate into the matter to draw out an effective solution to curtail down such incidents so that lives of both man and animals can be saved. Resolutions were also taken to ensure free movement of the elephants through their natural corridors and to form task forces at the circle levels to create awareness and other needful actions.

Meanwhile, DFO Jitendra Kumar informed the house that ex-gratia is being paid to the eligible relatives of the elephant death victims. Earlier, Manas Das explained the purpose of the meeting and gave a current picture of the man-elephant conflict in the district.
