GOALPARA: Khanindra Choudhury, Deputy Commissioner of Goalpara district, has directed all the line departments to take immediate and effective steps to curb the use of drugs and psychotropic substances among the students and youths.

In this regard, the Goalpara district meet of Narco Coordination Centre (NCORD) was held on Saturday at the DC’s conference hall. The DC appraised the house regarding the concern of Chief Minister to curtail drugs and narcotic-related crimes in the State. The meeting then thoroughly discussed the action taken report of the departments concerned based on its April month meet.

Superintendent of Police VV Rakesh Reddy shared the information about the arrest of 21 persons in 10 new cases since its last NCORD meet on April 26. The SP further informed that police has recovered during this period heroin 156.6 grams, prohibited tablets 11,620 and cough syrup 720 bottles. The Excise department reported that it has ensured about the display of warnings in every liquor shop regarding the prohibition of consumption and trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.

The DC also directed the Inspector of Schools to inform every ME schools to undertake the pledge to ‘Fight against drug abuse’ and upload the same in the specific government website. The high students school in the district have already taken pledge and downloaded the certificates from the website.

Several line departments were directed in the meeting to carry out street dramas to create awareness while the health department was specifically directed to figure out the number of the addicted patients through its health centres. The meeting was virtually attended by the Narcotics Control Bureau, Guwahati.

Meanwhile, the Krishnai station of Goalpara police on Sunday recovered 5,075 bottles of cough syrup from the Assam-Meghalaya border. The police apprehended three persons and seized two vehicles.
