UDALGURI: "Gorkhas are the oldest inhabitants in BTAD. They are hard-working people. If they are given land rights and due honour, they will live with dignity," said State Finance Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma while addressing an election meeting held at Khusurabari Habi village in Udalguri on Monday.

He assured the villagers that their problems would be solved soon. KishorUpadhyaya, the secretary of BJP, cautioned the people that the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) and the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) did not favour the Gorkha community people. He also alleged that UPPL candidate GobindaBasumatari had filed a petition in the Supreme Court terming the Gorkha community as non-aboriginal people. PremTamang, the chairman of Gorkha Development Council, said that the BJP government was doing its best for the development of the Gorkha community people in Assam.

Himanta Biswa Sarma sought votes from people for Birdau Basumatari, the BJP candidate for Bhairabkunda constituency. "If BJP is voted to power, each BTC constituency will get 100-km road, hospital, stadium and other facilities," he assured. He also said that the VCDC system would be abolished and the three-tier panchayati raj system would be introduced.
