BISWANATH CHARIALI: State Education and Finance Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Thursday at Barangabari near Gohpur that the State Government was thinking of setting up of a State university at Gohpur in Biswanath district in the name of martyr Kanaklata Baruah who had sacrificed her life during the Quit India Movement. He was laying the foundation stone of a GNM School and Para-Medical Institute.

Addressing a huge public gathering on the occasion, Sarma dwelt at length about several government schemes being carried out in the State for the development of different classes, ranging from girls and poor students to women Self-Help Groups (SHG), from tea garden communities to entrepreneurs. He said that the government had made arrangements to transfer money to the accounts of beneficiaries directly so that they can avail its benefits. The meritorious girl students would be given Scooty from December onwards, he added.

Criticizing sharply the activities of Congress and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), Sarma said that those political parties had brought perils to the people of the State and a 'Miyan culture' had grown under the patronage of the Congress. "We will have to face it unitedly," he said.

Earlier, he visited the Kalyani Temple at Dipora and then proceeded to Daimalu and Kalabari to attend public rallies by riding bicycles. Sarma was accompanied by minister Ranjit Dutta, parliamentarians Biswajit Daimary and Pallav Lochan Das, ASTC chairperson Ashok Bhattarai and others.
