KOKRAJHAR: Assam Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi during his one-day visit to Kokrajhar on Monday, called for team BTC to work on a common cause and implement the targeted schemes. He also thanked the BTC functionaries for their good work.

Speaking to media persons at Kokrajhar Circuit House, Governor Mukhi said he had developed the system of BTC administration since he took over the charge of the council. He said there was lack of proper system to run the council but after taking over charge since April 27, a good and developed system could be established. He also said he would hand over the transparent and good system to BTC.

Governor Mukhi said no new and big schemes had been taken up in BTC other than completing the ongoing schemes due to Model Code of Conduct of BTC election but he had taken measures to stop felling of trees, illegal activities and illegal encroachments in reserve forests. He could also systematize the land revenue after requesting the State Election Commission (SEC) on urgent basis. He also said that afforestation programmes were carried out in the degraded forest land and plantation of 40 lakh saplings would be completed soon.

When asked about action taken against illegal sand mining at River Gaurang near Kokrajhar town, Governor Mukhi said that if such illegal activities were taking place he would take prompt action. He asked the Administrator of BTC to note the matter and stop the illegal activities very soon. On holding of BTC election, Mukhi said no one could say when it would be held during the ongoing pandemic situation and the decision depended on the State Election Commission.

Governor Mukhi held a meeting with the Deputy Commissioners, Superintendents of Police and other officers to work with senior officers of different departments and called upon the officers to pursue a common cause to boost the welfare of the people. He also asked them to work unrelentingly to meet the targets of implementation of the government schemes.

Holding separate meetings with the district functionaries of Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa and Udalguri at BTC Secretariat in Kokrajhar on Monday, the Governor said that since the government was committed to bolster development of BTC, the council administration should be particularly sincere not only to protect the interest of its people but also to promote and build a social empowerment narrative in BTC. Making it adequately clear, Governor Prof Mukhi said that no laxity would be tolerated in implementing the schemes as the officials should astutely adhere to the targets set for the implementation of different schemes in BTC areas. The Governor also said that looking into existing diversities in BTC areas where people belonging to different ethnicities and communities have different problems and different requirements, it had become highly essential for the BTC functionaries to work on a common cause. He also asked the BTC Administrator Rajesh Prasad and Principal Secretary Siddharth Singh to steer the BTC administration in a way to fulfil the basic needs of the people.

During the meeting, the Governor took stock of the projects being implemented under Public Works Department, both road and building. In the meeting, the Governor was informed that 20 ongoing building constructions works were completed since April 27, 2020.

The Governor also took stock of the plantation project called 'Hariyali' which he launched on the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5 under which a target was set for planting 40 lakh saplings in the BTC area. Under the programme, 44.14 lakh seedlings had been planted and distributed, thus achieving a target of 82.54 per cent. He also claimed that 27 illegal saw mills had been seized so far.

Governor Mukhi also visited the construction site of Kokrajhar Medical College and Hospital at Besorgaon in Kokrajhar on his way back to Guwahati.
