'Green Tourism' To Be Promoted in Rural Darrang

MANGALDAI: "Mangaldai Media Circle"–a premier organization of the media persons in Darrang district has come forward for promotion of the manifold benefits of the rural nursery industry including its income generating opportunities against a minimum investment as well as its possible contribution in the preservation of the local biodiversity and the greenery campaign in the context of the threats to our environment due to alarming 'climate change' situation. The scribe body in a meeting organized on Saturday in the natural atmosphere of "Florica Nursery and Botanica Biodiversity Park", a result of nearly seventeen years committed efforts of former Cottonian Hiranya Nath at his native village Balipara in Sipajhar, discussed the role of media organizations in sensitizing the local educated youths in taking up nursery as a lucrative means of self employment only with the help of the locally available plant varieties.

Speaking on the occasion, the owner of the Florica Nursery and a prominent landscape artist of the State, Hiranya Nath narrated how his affinity towards the rich biodiversity of the locality since his childhood helped him to take up nursery business where he slowly created a huge market of saplings of locally available flora and earned good profit. He further stated that his Botanica Biodiversity Park is presently habitation of nearly two hundred local species of plant. "After the nursery was set up in the year 2002, the biodiversity park was developed in the year 2003 covering an area of four bighas of land which is now home of around two hundred local flora besides several species of reptiles, birds, wild cats and rabbit," Nath opined. He also discussed about the scope of developing a nursery into an organic horticulture garden and addition of fishery culture to transform it into a commercial rural tourist destination with facilities of angling and boating which he has already done in the Florica Nursery campus to attract the natural lovers at regular basis.

Several other public issues of the district including the growing cases of cancer in the district particularly in Sipajhar area were also discussed and the meeting decided to organize some health awareness programmes with the help of the AMC Alumni Association and Academic Forum , Guwahati, starting from the Balipara village in the month of November. Journalists Bhargab Kr Das, Ganesh Dutta, Shrawan Kr Jha, Hemanta Kumar Barua, Jyoti Saharia and Dharmendra Narayan Deb also took part in the discussion presided over by its president Hitesh Hazarika and put forward some relevant suggestions. Earlier, secretary of Mangaldai Media Circle Mayukh Goswami explained the objectives of the meeting.
