GRP Apprehends Supari Syndicate Kingpin, Seizes Contraband at Guwahati Railway Station

GUWAHATI: In a significant operation, the Government Railway Police (GRP) successfully apprehended a notorious kingpin associated with the supari syndicate at Guwahati Railway Station. Identified as Anil Bhareja, the individual was found in possession of a substantial quantity of imported supari. Acting on credible information, the GRP intercepted the Avadh Assam express train upon its arrival on Tuesday night.

During the thorough inspection of the train, the security forces discovered 250 packets of imported supari, suspected to be smuggled from Myanmar. The consignment had been loaded onto the train at Dimapur, as the train made its way from Dibrughar to Lalgarh in Bikaner, passing through Guwahati and Delhi. The estimated value of the seized supari is approximately Rs 70 lakh.

The confiscated contraband is presently secured at Guwahati Railway Station, awaiting further legal proceedings. Anil Bhareja, the arrested individual, is now facing charges under relevant sections of the law. Authorities are conducting an ongoing investigation to uncover potential connections and unravel the full extent of the syndicate's operations.

This incident follows a recent seizure by Cachar Police, where two trucks loaded with illegal Burmese supari, weighing around 3000 kilograms, were confiscated at the Assam-Mizoram border near Lailapur. The trucks were intercepted during a naka checking at the Lailapur Patrol Post, while they were transporting the illicit contraband from Mizoram to Cachar in Assam. The supari had been cleverly concealed in hidden compartments within the trucks, and its market value is estimated to be worth lakhs of rupees.

As a result of the operation, the drivers of the two trucks and a co-pilot were apprehended by the police. The successful seizures and arrests demonstrate the concerted efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat the illegal supari trade, which poses a threat to public health and safety.

The arrest of Anil Bhareja and the confiscation of a significant amount of smuggled supari highlight the persistent challenges faced by authorities in curbing the activities of the supari syndicate. The diligent work of the Government Railway Police and Cachar Police in intercepting these consignments underscores their commitment to maintaining law and order.
