GUWAHATI: Direct flights to Bangkok, Thailand are now being offered out of the LGBI Airport in Guwahati. Friday night saw the arrival of the first flight from Bangkok at the Guwahati airport.

Three times a week, on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday, flights between Guwahati and Bangkok will depart from LGBI Airport. The flight, operated by Thai AirAsia, departs at 11:40 PM. Guwahati Airport and Bangkok's Don Mueang International Airport will be connected by Thai AirAsia.

In an effort to increase tourism, Thailand is granting Indian passport holders visa-free entry from November 10, 2023, to May 10, 2024. In an effort to increase trade between the region and Southeast Asian countries, the North East Festivals have recently been held in Vietnam and Thailand.

The biggest airport in northeastern India is called Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBI). Since its founding in 1958, it has experienced multiple renovations and expansions. With over 5 million passengers handled there in 2022–2023, it is the 12th busiest airport in India.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Ankur Jain, Director, IPS, Assam Skill Development Mission, Chief Airport Officer, (Guwahati Airport) Utpal Baruah and Wuitchuni Kuntapeng, Chief Executive Officer, Thai Air Asia, Bangkok and Shyam Malani, Director, Indo Thai, Guwahati.

Utpal Baruah, the Chief Airport Officer said, "Our airport has marched ahead with this new connection towards making this airport a hub to the South East Asian countries. It will give a fillip to the tourism industry in this region. We all, airport, airline, government and other stakeholders should work jointly to make this route sustainable. "

He also mentioned that Druk Air offers direct flights from LGBI Airport to Paro, Bhutan and Singapore twice a week. Additionally, there will soon be direct flights to Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia. The increased demand for travel between the two nations is the reason for the new service.
