Guwahati Court Orders Police To File Complaint Against AIUDF Chief Badruddin Ajmal

GUWAHATI: Due to a complaint made by Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) leader Dulu Ahmed regarding alleged indecent remarks made against Hindu women on December 3, a lower court in Guwahati on Tuesday ordered the police to file a case against AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal.

Ahmed claimed he had brought the problem to the attention of the Guwahati police commissioner and the Kamrup (Metro) chief judicial magistrate's court after 10 days had passed and no case had been opened by the police.

Pranjit Hazarika, a special judicial magistrate, stated after hearing the case: "After speaking with the complainant and following up on the complaint, it is apparent that the current situation requires a police investigation. As a result, the officer in command of the Hatigaon police station is instructed to file an FIR, conduct the necessary investigation either personally or through a junior officer, and then submit the report in its final form."

Ahmed claimed in the appeal that despite inciting animosity amongst members of various religious groups and violating communal peace, the accused was nonetheless able to move around.

However, he continued, "the police have not acted despite the commission of offences that are cognizable in nature, intentional insult with intent to incite the breaking of the peace, and also generating and encouraging animosity, hatred, or ill-will between classes." In an interview with the news agency ANI, Ajmal suggested that Hindus follow the "Muslim formula" by getting married young and having lots of kids, much like Muslims do, to boost their population. The comment provoked debate and backlash across the state. Different political groups and individuals filed a number of FIRSs at various police stations throughout the state.

Ajmal had been accused of breaking several laws, and Ahmed had petitioned the court to order the officer in charge of the Hatigaon police station to file a case against him, look into the situation, and provide a report as soon as possible.
