Guwahati ferry services stop operating at night because of safety concerns
Due to dangerous river conditions that seriously jeopardize passenger safety, all midnight ferry services departing from Guwahati have been suspended today.
According to the Inland Water Transport Division, authorities have decided to restrict the last departure from Guwahati to 6:00 pm on June 27 due to hazardous navigation circumstances caused by floating wooden logs and strong river currents.
Thousands of commuters who depend on ferry services to cross the Brahmaputra River every day are impacted by the decision, especially those who are traveling between Guwahati and locations on the north side of the river.
Ferry operators emphasized that the suspension puts property protection and public safety ahead of service continuation.
Ferry vessels have found evening and nighttime navigation extremely dangerous due to strong river currents, which have probably been exacerbated by recent monsoon activity, and debris, such as wooden logs, moving downstream. These circumstances seriously raise the possibility of collisions and jeopardize ferry operators' capacity to provide safe travel.
Once river conditions improve and navigation concerns are removed, regular operations will resume, according to the Executive Engineer of the IWT Division Guwahati. It has been suggested that travelers who intend to travel in the evening change their plans or find other ways to get out sooner.
