GUWAHATI: Sixteen-year-old Rajhans Sishu Vidyalaya, Rukmini Nagar student Anushka Das has been a shining example of academic excellence by achieving 562 out of 600 marks (93.6%) in High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) exams while suffering from cancer for the past one year.
Anushka was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma when she found a lump in her neck on January 24, 2024. Even after her mother advised her to get herself scanned, Anushka waited until the end of her Class IX final exams. The latter confirmed her diagnosis by conducting a subsequent biopsy from the B Borooah Cancer Institute and she began her treatment on 6 March 2024. For that, the doctors had suggested her to take six courses of chemotherapy and 15 radiation sessions that continued through this year's January.
Throughout her treatment, Anushka remained committed to her studies. “Everyone told me to drop a year, but I felt I should continue. It helped take my mind off the illness,” she stated. On days when she underwent chemotherapy, she utilized her hospital time to study, often watching educational videos on science and mathematics.
In spite of the hardship posed by her medication, which affected her memory, Anushka remained committed to her studies. Her father, Arunavo Das Choudhury, pointed out that her determination was the key to her achievement. Anushka Das's dedication is a heartwarming testament to resilience and the human spirit under hardship.
