Guwahati: Highest Number Of Murders, Dowry Deaths Reported In 2022

GUWAHATI: In 2022, Guwahati City reported 72 murder cases, the most in the previous four years. According to the Guwahati City Police report, 71, 52, 61, and 72 murder cases would be reported in each of the following years: 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022. Rape cases rose in 2022 in the same manner. In 2022, 62 occurrences of rape have been reported, compared to 60 in 2021 and 39 in 2020.

On the other hand, in 2022, 11 dowry death cases apparently came to light. There were two dowry incidents reported in 2021. In Guwahati, dowry death cases were reported in 6, 9, and 2 cases in 2018, 2019, and 2020, respectively.

In 2022, the city's crime rate decreased by 50%, according to information released by the Police Commissionerate.

Additionally, Guwahati residents are in a state of panic after the city experienced several chain snatching episodes at gunpoint, frequent theft cases, and murders committed in broad daylight, however, statistics released by the Guwahati city Police indicate that the city saw a 50% fall in overall crime.

On January 2, the Police Commissioner stated in a media interview that occasionally the general population is careless. "Criminals are given opportunities to commit crimes because of negligence." He stated that plans have been made to actively include the public and the civic body in controlling it.

The Police Commissioner stated that occasionally, the public is negligent when speaking to the media on Monday, January 2. Negligence provides criminals with the possibility to perpetrate crimes. Plans have been put in place to effectively engage the public and the civic body in order to contain it, he added.

Guwahati Police said that a total of 10,234 cases were filed in 2022, with 34.530 cases previously on hold. In contrast to the 21,545 cases that were resolved by the Guwahati Police in 2021, only 17,112 cases were resolved in 2022. At the end of 2022, there will still be 27,652 cases open.
