Guwahati: Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh inaugurated the Northeastern States Meet for the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) in Guwahati on January 6, 2024.
The event, hosted at Hotel Radisson in Guwahti, aimed to enhance the fisheries sector in the Northeast and was conducted in a hybrid format to encourage wider participation. The focus of the meeting was to evaluate the progress of PMMSY and its impact on regional fisheries.
During the event, the Union Minister laid the foundation for fisheries projects worth approximately Rs. 50 crore, designed to promote a self-sustaining fisheries industry in the Northeast.
Additionally, various certificates, including NFDP registration certificates, KCC cards, and awards for Best FFPOs and Fisheries Start-ups, were distributed to beneficiaries. A key announcement was the creation of an Organic Fisheries Cluster in Soreng District, Sikkim, which aims to foster sustainable aquaculture practices.
Dr. J.K. Jena, Deputy Director General at ICAR, led a session addressing challenges in Northeast fisheries, such as resource management, infrastructure deficits, market access, and climate change impacts. He also suggested innovative solutions tailored to the region’s needs.
The meeting emphasized the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure, market linkages, and introducing advanced techniques to boost productivity, economic growth, and self-sufficiency in fish production. It underscored the importance of sustainable practices and highlighted the potential for the fisheries sector to drive regional development.
