Guwahati: Lt. Gen. RP Kalita Urges Assamese Youth to Shun Extremism, Join Indian Army

GUWAHATI: In a recent media address at the Guwahati Press Club, Lt. General RP Kalita, the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Eastern Command, expressed concerns about the decreasing interest of Assamese youth in joining the Indian Army, attributing it to a lack of awareness. He highlighted the unfortunate trend of some youths opting for outlawed factions like the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) and emphasized society's role in addressing this issue.

Lt. General Kalita stressed the prevailing peace in Assam over the last decade, improved infrastructure, and developmental initiatives. He urged the younger generation not to jeopardize their lives by associating with extremist organizations. Reflecting on his personal journey, Lt. General Kalita shared that becoming a successful officer in the Indian Army was his childhood dream, achieved through significant hard work, giving credit to his parents for his success.

Addressing the security challenges in the Northeast, Lt. General Kalita discussed the ongoing efforts, spanning two decades, to counter China's aggressive behavior along the frontiers of Arunachal Pradesh. Despite challenges in the Himalayan belt, he underscored the importance of societal support, stating that no war in the world could be won solely with the help of the armed forces.

The Eastern Command, responsible for nine states, including the eight Northeastern states and West Bengal, plays a crucial role in safeguarding the region. Lt. General Kalita emphasized the Command's commitment to preventing narco-terrorism in the Northeastern states, highlighting the progress made in recent years.

Lt. General Kalita shared his fondness for Assamese food culture, expressing a childhood craving for Poita Bhaat (fermented rice), Daal, Aloo Pitika (mashed potatoes), and Bhoot Jolokia (Ghost Chilies). He also revealed that his interest in joining the Indian Armed Forces was sparked by reading the Hindu mythological Sanskrit epic, Mahabharata.

Lt. General RP Kalita's address underscored the importance of awareness, discouraged youth from joining extremist groups, and shed light on the ongoing efforts to ensure the security and development of the Northeastern region.
