GUWAHATI: A Congress worker has lost his life after tear gas was used by the police during a demonstration in Guwahati, Assam. He has been identified as Mridul Islam who worked as an advocate.

The incident was caused by police intervention, including tear gas shelling, in response to the protest, which was coordinated by the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC).

After being taken to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for emergency care, he passed away from the injuries he sustained. Hundreds of Congress members and supporters marched towards the Raj Bhavan in Kharguli as part of the worldwide "Raj Bhavan Chalo" event.

The installation of smart meters, the BJP-led government's failure to bring up the Manipur issue in Parliament, accusations of corruption against the Adani Group, and the proposed "One Nation, One Election" Bill were among the concerns that sparked the protest.

Police stopped the demonstrators near the IOCL Water Intake Plant as they marched towards the Raj Bhavan. Islam was killed as police used tear gas to try to disperse the masses. Following the incident, a number of prominent Congress figures were arrested, including senior leader Ripun Bora, APCC Chief Bhupen Borah, and Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia.

The "One Nation, One Election" (ONOE) Constitution Amendment Bill was presented to the Lok Sabha by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on Tuesday.
