GUWAHATI: The Assam Legislative Assembly Secretariat has revealed that as per the directives of state Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, a noteworthy event is about to occur and the commencement of its budget session to begin on February 5, 2024.
As per the announcement released by the Secretariat, the Assembly Chamber in Dispur will host the budget session commencing at 9:30 am on February 5 and concluding on February 28, 2024. The Finance Minister of Assam's government is scheduled to unveil their state budget for fiscal year 2023-24 during this period.
The budget session of this year holds added importance, with the Government of Assam introducing their new Green Budget 2023-24 initiative. Assam has now become the first state in North East India and second one across the country to adopt an eco-friendly approach that focuses on improving sustainability and measures against climatic changes within its borders.
The budget for the upcoming fiscal year 2023-24 has been allocated to cover a range of expenses and allocations, such as revenue expenditure, capital outlay, and state-given loans. The earmarked amounts for these areas are 1,11,337 (for revenue expenditure), 23,822 (for capital outlay), and 189 (for loans given by the state). Together they add up to a net expense of approximately 1 lakh thirty-five thousand three hundred forty-eight.
Presided over by the current Speaker, Shri Biswajit Daimary, Dispur's Assembly Chamber will hold proceedings and is recognized as Assam's largest constituency with 3.53 lakh voters.
Since its inaugural budget session in March 1973, the Assam Legislative Assembly has boasted a rich history. As of today, it consists of 126 seats that represent an array of political groups and is continuously developing.
With the budget session looming, attention will shift to the Assam Legislative Assembly as it prepares for defining economic prospects that would shape upthe state's future. The challenge lies in weighing financial growth against environmental concerns and outlining a cohesive plan reflecting government objectives and priorities for the upcoming year.
