GUWAHATI: Hatigaon Police on Tuesday nabbed a woman allegedly running a cash-for-jobs racket in Guwahati, promising jobs to potential candidates in state government departments.
Reports said the accused, identified as Jeena Begum, a resident of the Six Mile area of the city, took money from unemployed youth by promising them jobs in the state government's Social Welfare department.
The arrested fraud woman confessed to the police during interrogation that she has accumulated Rs 2 crores and 20 lakhs by using this modus operandi.
Meanwhile, it has emerged that Begum had earlier, in 2020, duped more than 20 people of their money by promising fourth grade jobs and appointment as office assistants in the state's Social Welfare department.
Having duped the victims by taking their money, Begum allegedly provided them with fake appointment letters, which were later disowned by the department concerned, officials informed. The fraud woman is said to have gone to the extent of preparing and publishing false appointment lists in newspapers to convince her victims.
The police said they arrested the woman based on complaints received by victims of the cash for jobs racket.
It is interesting to note that the fraud woman has been operating her devious scheme right under the noses of the police in the city, evading arrest since 2020.
In an earlier incident, recently, seven alleged brokers in a similar racket involving providing fake appointment letters to job aspirants in state government departments were picked up from a lodge in the Borbari area of the city. The arrests were reportedly made on the strength of information provided by Victor Das, the tutor who had blown the lid off a scam in the direct recruitment exams for Grade III and IV jobs and was arrested by the police for his efforts. He was recently granted absolute bail by the Gauhati High Court.
