HAFLONG: Seeking review of the decision for conducting examinations, Daniel Langthasa, Member, North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council, Haflong, submitted a memorandum to the Principal, Haflong Government College, on Thursday.

MAC Langthasa stated that during the COVID-19 pandemic, the University Grants Commission (UGC) had called for conducting the final semester examination and this was a matter of concern. "First, COVID-19 cases are increasing with every passing day in the State as well as in the district. Students of Haflong Government College are from various parts of the district and some are even from other districts. Since the students will assemble together for writing the exam, there are chances that a single infected student (if any) may infect all the other students and teachers. At the same time, students who are from other districts may face problems coming here and finding accommodation to stay during the period of examination," he said.

"Second, since the colleges are closed from the month of March, hence the students could not attend classes and could not complete the syllabus. So, there are chances that the students won't be able to write the examination in a proper manner and that may ultimately affect their career in the days to come," he further said.

"Lastly, it is found that some online classes that were conducted during this lockdown period were inaccessible to most of the students as majority of the students are from far-flung areas of the district where internet connectivity is not available. At the same time, some students are from poor families and cannot afford to buy smart phones and they were unable to get the benefit of the online classes," added Langthasa

Taking into consideration to these points, Langthasa urged the authorities concerned to expedite a process with the UGC so that examination could be postponed further or some alternative forms be adopted for granting degrees to the students.
