Hailakandi: Hailakandi district has bagged the second rank among the 33 districts of Assam in Swachhta Darpan 2019 under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen), scoring 57.96 out of 100. Dibrugarh secured the first position.

Sources said the performance was calculated on the basis of three parameters: open defecation free (ODF) declaration (60 percent weight), information, education and communication and capacity building (20 percent weight), and solid and liquid waste management (20 percent weight).

Deputy Commissioner, Keerthi Jalli while congratulating Team Hailakandi for the achievement asked them to toil hard to obtain a 100 percent score in all three parameters. The district that attained open defecation free status in 2018 had built over 84,000 individual household latrines on the basis of a 2012 baseline survey under SBM-G.

Executive Engineer, Public Health Engineering Department, Hailakandi Division, Megha Das said all-out efforts will be made to obtain a cent percent score in Swachhta Darpan and also to secure a good position in Swachh Survekshan Grameen. Swachh Survekshan Grameen is a national survey that reviews the progress of the cleanliness drive in rural areas. Creating awareness on the use of toilets is being carried out in all 331 villages covering 62 Gaon Panchayats of the district. “We are enthused about achieving the second position in Swachhta Darpan in the state. But our aim is to achieve the number one spot”, said Das.
