Hailakandi: The Hailakandi district administration has initiated steps for the smooth implementation of the Government of Assam’s Arundhati Gold Scheme.

A meeting was held at Deputy Commissioner’s conference hall chaired by Additional Deputy Commissioner RK Dam on Friday to set the scheme rolling. Assistant Commissioner cum Sub Registrar, Sari L Lungtau, Circle Officers, Block Development Officers, and Block Elementary Education Officers attended the meeting.

Dam urged all the officials to ensure the smooth implementation of the scheme.

The scheme has been set for implementation by the State Government from January this year, as per which it will gift 10 grams of gold to every adult bride.

Under the scheme, an amount of Rs 30,000 will be deposited in the bank account of the bride to purchase gold. This amount cannot be used for other purposes.

However, there are some conditions to avail the benefit of the Assam government’s scheme, which will cost the state exchequer approximately Rs 800 crore per annum. The government has earmarked Rs 300 crore for the three months of the scheme in this fiscal. Notably, the conditions are not applicable to the bridegroom except for the minimum age requirement.

The minimum age of the bride and groom should be 18 and 21 years, respectively. The benefit will be given only in the case of the first marriage of the girl. The marriage must be registered under the Special Marriage Act, 1954. The annual income of the bride and her father should not be over Rs 5 lakh. The bride should have studied at least till Class 10. However, the educational qualification criterion will not be applicable to the girls belonging to the tea garden communities and Adivasis.

This social and secular scheme which is population centered will help in education awareness, women empowerment, and prohibition of child marriages in the state.

The Revenue and Disaster Management (Registration) is the nodal department for the implementation of the scheme. The online application form is available at the link: revenueassam.nic.in
