Hailstorm lashes many areas of Baksa district

GORESWAR: A hailstorm lashed many areas of Nagrijuli, Bangalipara, Tamulpur, Naokata, Maharipara, Goreswar etc in Baksa district on Thursday, causing damage to crops of farmers, schools , business shops, cable wires, electric wires, posts, dwelling houses. Many places of Guwahati-Goreswar-Bogamati road were blocked by tress and electric wires and posts. Hundreds became homeless due to the damage of the dwelling houses.
According to reports, the hailstorm and winds damaged standing crops like banana, betel nut, coconut and other vegetable in Baksa district. Promod Das, a local resident of Silkijhar village said that the hailstorm was so intense in the area that about one inch snow had accumulated outside. He added that winds were quite frightening on Thursday night and it damaged sign boards, business establishments and dwelling houses in many villages. The tin sheets were also blown away. Many trees had fallen on electric wires and broke many electric posts. As a result power supply had been disrupted in many places.
Moreover, Sankardev Accademy of Naokata and Pragya Jatiya Vidyalay of Bangalipara and Maharipara Police Patrolling Camp under Goreswar Revenue circle were severely damaged. The public have demanded compensation for the damage to their crops and dwelling houses due to hailstorm and winds.
