DIBRUGARH: The DHSK College Students' Union (DHSKCSU) has conferred its newly-introduced Hasan Sarif Ahmed Samannay Award to their Principal Dr Sashi Kanta Saikia at a function held at the college premises on Wednesday.

The meeting organized on the occasion was presided over by Prof. Sultana Baruah. Amongst others, the meeting was graced by Deputy Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha, Inspector of School, Dipika Chowdhury, member of the college managing committee and secretary of Asom Unnati Sabha, Dibrugarh unit, advocate Abhimunya Baruah and alumnus of the college and a political personality, Mehdi Alam Bora.

Hasan Sarif Ahmed, an ace artiste of Dibrugarh, was the general secretary of the first students' union of the college. A well-known drama artiste, Hasan Sarif Ahmed was one of the pioneers of Asom Natya Andolon who also had adorned the post of ANS secretary, Dibrugarh unit. Mentioning Hasan Sarif Ahmed's contribution towards cultural as well as social development, DHSKCSU president said that the award would be conferred each year in memory of the artiste on his death anniversary.

Deputy Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha attending the meeting as chief guest and handed over the award to the Principal, a noted writer, poet, columnist, brand ambassador of Swaccha Bharat Mission, president of the Dibrugarh Xahitya Xabha and Karmayogi award winner, Dr Sashi Kanta Saikia.

In his brief deliberation, Jha lauded DHSKCSU for introducing Sammanaya Award in the name of Hasan Sarif Ahmed, one of the progressive and socially conscious artistes of Dibrugarh. He further said that this year's recipient of the award, Dr Saikia deserved it for his contribution towards the development of the college.

Speakers, who addressed the meeting appreciated DHSKCSU for selecting their Principal, Dr Sasikanta Saikia as a first recipient of the award.

Former Headmaster of Jorge Institution, presently known as Bangmibar Nilmoni Higher Secondary School, Saheer Ahmed, who is the brother of Hasan Sarif Ahmed, donated a portrait of the artiste to the DHSKCU. The artist's son, Hasan Arman Ahmed offered his gratitude to all members of the DHSKCSU for introducing the award in his father's memory and all those who made the programme a grand success.
