BOKAKHAT: A herd of wild elephants caused extensive damage at the Dhansiri Eco Camp, a popular tourist lodge located in Dhanbari Bamun Gaon near Bokakhat, on Sunday night. The incident occurred as floodwaters in the region began to recede. The elephants, believed to have come from the Agaratoli forest area of Kaziranga National Park’s eastern range, which is close to the Dhanbari forest camp, entered the eco camp and destroyed property worth several lakhs of rupees, including multiple structures.

Gautam Saikia, a renowned documentary filmmaker and the owner of the Dhansiri Eco Camp, reported that the elephants rampaged through various parts of the camp, including the kitchen, dining hall, and rest areas. They damaged all the furniture, including chairs and tables, and broke down several walls and windows.

Fortunately, no guests or staff were present at the time, and no injuries or casualties were reported. This marks the first instance of wild elephants entering the Dhansiri Eco Camp, which holds a special designation from the tourism department.

Local residents of Bamun Gaon believe the elephants may have entered the camp in search of food, driven by hunger due to the ongoing flood situation.
