High-level official visits landslide-affected portion of Haflong-Silchar road

HAFLONG: To take stock of damages caused by incessant rain and landslides on the Haflong-Silchar road and others, Raj Chakraborty, Commissioner & Special Secretary, PWD (Building & NH Department), visited all the damaged locations between Haflong-Silchar road on Saturday.

The Commissioner was accompanied by Deputy Commissioner Nazreen Ahmed, Regional Officer, NHAI, Alok Kumar, Assistant Commissioner, Ibon Teron and officials from NHAI and NHIDCL. Commissioner Chakraborty informed that the Assam Government was concerned about the situation in Dima Hasao in regard to the road communication and had formed six groups of dedicated officers to examine and study the cause and remedy of the situation caused by heavy landslides due to incessant rain. He also said for both, immediate and permanent solution, experts and experienced officials from Arunachal, Sikkim would be hired to study the entire area for construction of road. Since the portion from Nriambunglo to Harangajao has been awarded to a company for construction, construction work is expected to start from October and for this stop gap, a temporary but durable solution should be made to restore the communication. He assured that the NHAI would be supported by all the agencies for permanent solution.

RO Kumar said that they were putting in all efforts to restore the road communication but rain was hindering the work. If rains stop for a few days, the road will be motorable as the heavy machinery could be pressed in for the work.

Dima Hasao Deputy Commissioner Nazreen Ahmed, who has been frequently visiting the damaged sites and closely monitoring the restoration works, said the district administration, N C Hills Autonomous Council and others have been working in a concerting way so that the district could tide over this calamity very soon.
