Himanta Biswa Sarma aims to make Assam a 'knowledge-based epicenter'

During the Anundoram Borooah Award ceremony on Wednesday, Assam Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that around 6% of Assam's GDP has been spent on the state's health and education which is more than any state in the country.

He also said that Assam is among the top 5 states in India for its literacy rate. Sarma also said that the goal of his ministry to make Assam a knowledge-based epicenter.

The Anundoram Borooah Awards were distributed among 16,944 meritorious students who scored 75% or more in their HSLC exams. The Assam Government has spent a total of Rs.34 crores (Rs. 20,000 to each student) to buy laptops.

Sarma further mentioned that his ministry was questioned and criticized for conferring the awards as an election gimmick and whether the government will be able to continue this award but the government made it possible to give away the awards every year to the deserving students.
