Guwahati: Assam Finance and Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma late on Wednesday reached the Mahendra Mohan Choudhary Hospital (MMCH) in Guwahati's Panbazar to bid adieu to 22 coronavirus patients who were discharged yesterday after recovery.

Sarma, who reached the MMCH with State Health and Family Welfare Pijush Hazarika, took to Twitter to write, "Always good to see patients leave and go home. I and Pijush Hazarika were present at MMCH to say goodbye to 22 patients who left happily for home today after their tests for Covid-19 came negative twice. Wishing them best."

Earlier in the day, Sarma had tweeted that 25 patients had been discharged across Assam after recovering from the respiratory illness. "Glad to share that total 25 patients have been discharged today in Assam after being tested #COVID19 negative twice. 22 from MMCH, 2 from SMCH & 1 from JMCH. Total discharged patients - 87. Active patients - 680", he said.

Meanwhile, Assam is inching close to the 800-case mark in the number of coronavirus cases. Out of 798 cases reported so far, 704 cases are active, and 87 patients have been discharged. Four people in the state have been killed by the respiratory ill and 3 people have been migrated elsewhere. Of these, 15 fresh cases were reported earlier in the morning today. Of the 15 new cases, 11 were reported in Kamrup Metro, three in Dibrugarh while one in Lakhimpur, said Sarma.

Experts and officials opine that the surge of cases in the Northeast Indian states is because of the recent influx of citizens who are now returning to the state after easing of relaxations. Meanwhile, the cases in the country are jumping upwards at an unprecedented rate.

India registered 6,566 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, thereby taking the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases at 1,58,333, according to the latest data released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The figure also includes 86,110 active cases.
